UK VAT Calculator
Add or remove VAT with a clear split between net, VAT and gross amounts.
LedgerKit provides estimates based on the information entered and the configured rates. Results do not constitute accounting, tax or legal advice. Check the latest official guidance or consult a qualified professional before acting on a calculation.
How this calculator works
Choose whether your starting amount includes VAT, enter the per-item amount and select a rate. Quantity multiplies each unrounded value before totals are displayed.
To remove VAT, divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 20%, £1,200 ÷ 1.20 gives £1,000 net, not £960.
Worked example
£1,000 excluding VAT at 20% gives £200 VAT and £1,200 including VAT. Starting with £1,200 including VAT produces the same breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
Is zero-rated the same as VAT exempt?
No. A zero rate calculates no VAT, but zero-rated and exempt supplies have different tax treatment. This calculator does not decide which treatment applies.
Can I use a different VAT rate?
Yes. Select Custom rate and enter the percentage. It is your responsibility to choose the correct rate for the supply.
Why can per-item figures differ from the total?
Calculations keep full decimal precision until display. Multiplying a displayed, rounded per-item figure can differ by a penny from the rounded total.
Does it handle VAT returns or the Flat Rate Scheme?
No. It splits individual amounts. It does not calculate VAT returns, partial exemption, mixed-rate invoices or Flat Rate Scheme liabilities.
